Election Day in America

Image
Election Day in America : The people of the United States spoke with their votes yesterday in local, state, and national races and on numerous ballot questions. President Obama was reelected after a hard-fought campaign with challenger Mitt Romney, and the Republicans and Democrats remained in control of their respective majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate. Here's a look at the voting process throughout Tuesday and into the early morning hours Wednesday of the celebrations and disappointment as the results came in. -- Lloyd Young ( 40 photos total ) Voters wait for the polling station to open to cast their ballots on Election Day, Nov. 6, outside the May Town Hall in May Township, Minn. Veterans Day 2012

Veterans Day 2012 : Over the past few days, United States veterans who have served in the armed forces were honored during Veterans Day events. It coincided with other countries marking Armistice Day or Remembrance day (Poppy Day), when in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the armistice between the allied nations and Germany in 1918 effectively ended World War I. -- Lloyd Young ( 37 photos total ) Kevin Palmer of Goshen, Ct., holds Michele Mathews on his shoulders as she makes a rubbing of where Palmer's uncle, Douglas Palmer's name is inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial the day after Veterans Day on Nov. 12 in Washington, D.C. SOE Killing PlanetSide 2′s Free Player Grind

Image
SOE Killing PlanetSide 2′s Free Player Grind : By and large, I’m very glad that free-to-play exists. It’s brought many fine, exceedingly hi-fidelity games back into the PC gaming fold, and I can’t argue with the option to jump in without spending a cent, coin, point, spacebuck, gorgle, or smarnx. Well, except when I can – and usually, that’s when the subject of unlocking comes up. The reason? It’s almost always excruciatingly slooooooooooow. Because naturally, those darn developers – who apparently need to eat occasionally and sleep under roofs  (the nerve!) – want you to drop a few extra dimes to speed up the process. It is, then, somewhat shocking – but no less appreciated – that SOE’s taking steps to buck that trend with PlanetSide 2 . Or at least make it a bit less of a bitter pill to swallow. (more…)

Artist 3D-Prints Skeletal Self-Portrait : Dutch sculptor Caspar Berger is known for the series of self-portraits he’s made over the past few years. Most recently, for a piece aptly titled Skeleton, he’s used data from a CT scan of his body to 3D-print life-sized replicas of his bones in translucent resin, which he then used [...] Read the full article on MAKE

Investing in green energy in Greene County, Iowa

Image
Investing in green energy in Greene County, Iowa : If you drive northwest from Des Moines, Iowa, you’ll see a lot of corn fields. From time to time, you’ll also see wind turbines rising out of those fields, making efficient use of our natural resources to produce renewable energy. It’s places like these that are home to a vibrant, emerging clean energy economy. Today we‘re announcing that we’ve made an equity investment of $75 million in a 50MW wind farm in Rippey, a small town in Greene County, about an hour outside of Des Moines. The Rippey project, developed by RPM Access , is expected to produce enough energy to power over 15,000 Iowa homes. The project, which is now in operation, uses turbines produced by Nordex USA at their Jonesboro, Ark. facility. Investment team members Nick Coons and Steffi Russell-Egbert visiting the Rippey project on a (windy) day in October. We’ve taken two approaches to greening the grid in Iowa, a state where we operate a data center . Back i

My Halloween costume for 2012: Matt Romney!

Image
My Halloween costume for 2012: Matt Romney! : My fellow Americans, I’d like to introduce my latest Halloween costume: Matt Romney! My five-point plan for the Mitt Romney Halloween costume went like this: Start with a suit and tie. Put a little silver in my sideburns. My wife used some silver and white eye shadow. Swoosh the hair up a little bit and lock it in with hairspray. Take off the glasses, and Add a flag. Boom! This was a fun, easy, comfortable costume. I practiced a few of Mitt Romney’s catchphrases and I think people really enjoyed seeing “Matt Romney” around the Googleplex. My wife and I are also trying something new for Halloween. I remember as a kid when I got a full-size candy bar for Halloween–it blew me away! I still remember those neighbors as really cool. Recently someone reminded me of that experience . So this year, the first couple dozen kids who stop by our house are in for a nice treat: Happy Halloween, everyone! You might also enjoy seeing some o
