Clear Sailing: Cleverly Transparent Canoes & Kayaks

Clear Sailing: Cleverly Transparent Canoes & Kayaks : [ By Delana in Technology & Vehicles & Mods . ] Sailing along in a canoe or kayak is an excellent way to spend an afternoon outdoors, but have you ever thought of everything you’re missing in a conventional boat? The solid bottom prevents you from seeing some of nature’s most amazing creations that exist in the water on which you travel. A transparent canoe or kayak, however, would give you a whole new perspective on the watery world. (all images via: See Through Canoe ) The see-through canoes/kayaks are even lighter than their wood or aluminum counterparts. Being made of the same material that is used to make bullet-proof windows, they are tough enough to withstand even the most brutal of conditions. And just like the glass-bottomed boats of years past, these transparent vessels let you see what is directly beneath you in the water. The canoe version weighs only 40 pounds and provides 100 percent visibility on

Guy Does Bento no. 7: Chicken karaage bento

Image
Guy Does Bento no. 7: Chicken karaage bento : The Guy Does Bento is back! This is one he made just for himself on a day I was feeling too sick to eat much of anything. Now that I am slowly getting my appetite back, just looking at it makes my mouth water. The bento features two of our favorite bento items: Chicken Karaage (leftovers - he made them himself the night before) and 1-egg tamagoyaki . The tamagoyaki here turned out a bit on the brown side, but The Guy says it was still very good. He’s filled out the rest of the bento with boiled broccoli and plain rice. He put a a bit of peeled broccoli stalk on top of the rice to add color. Notice he put in only one section’s worth of rice, packed in a bit loosely, to compensate a bit for the fried chicken. Overall this bento is probably around 700 calories, even though he did smoosh in as many pieces of chicken as he could. (There’s a couple of pieces tucked under the tamagoyaki too!) Here’s a dramatic closeup. The box used is

Results of the 2012 Bento&co contest, plus a few personal favorites

Results of the 2012 Bento&co contest, plus a few personal favorites : The results of the Bento&co contest are in, and the winning entry is this beautiful bento from Shirley from Singapore. It was in my top 10 too. The colors, the execution, and the content is impeccable. You can check out the rest of the top 10 as chosen by a group of judges (including myself) here . Since there were more than 220 entries and most of them were of very high quality, a few of my favorites did not make the top 10. Here are some of them. I liked this one by Lydia from Austria a lot because of the coconut-curry flavored onigiri, the neat little cherry tomato roses, and because it looks so tasty and healthy. I love the butterfly onigiri in this bento by Mandy from England. The colors are quite muted but it still looks delicious and very healthy too. This bento by Cyntia from France also has muted colors. It just goes to show that you don’t always need bright reds and yellows to make a

Yuzu scented winter vegetable tsukemono (pickles)

Image
Yuzu scented winter vegetable tsukemono (pickles) : You may have heard of a citrus fruit called yuzu, that has been on all kinds of trendy restaurant menus in the past few years. It is in fact one of many humble citruses that have been in use in Japan for a very long time. Yuzu trees are very slow to mature to the point where they can bear fruit, so fresh yuzu are rare and expensive outside of Japan. Dried yuzu peel and bottled yuzu juice are somewhat more accessible, but still very expensive. But yuzu has such a distinctive, delicious aroma that they are well worth the trouble and cost to get them. I managed to get some fresh yuzu this week, which I used for this super-simple Japanese-stye pickle recipe. Around 10 minutes of effort will reward you with several days’ worth of crunchy, tasty vegetables with a refreshing citrus-y kick to tuck into your bento as a salad or side vegetable, or just to eat at home. While I’ve given you several Japanese-style pickle (tsukemono) rec

From Hoarder to Home

From Hoarder to Home : Sender-Inner Sharon D. says: “Finlay was rescued from a hoarder house of 40 cats, all orange, all fluffy and all related to an original orange fluffy couple. With practically no human contact, he and his “brother” Reilly ( Mr. Nosevember !) were almost feral. The SPCA raided the house and were going to euthanize the lot of ‘em. VOKRA (Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association) stepped in to provide foster and forever homes for these beautiful cats. Reilly and Finlay were two of the shyest kitties, so I brought them home. They’re noisy cuddle monsters, now. This photo shows Finlay at the groomer. He has silky fine fluff, that gets knotted. I brush and comb him, but he still needs regular trips to the groomer. His face is priceless in this shot.” Filed under: Uncategorized Tagged: cats , ResQte
